The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Viagra, a prescription medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction, in Canada and has approved several other medicines, including those that treat and prevent the development of prostate cancer. However, the FDA has not approved the medication for use in the U.
In a statement, the agency said it is reviewing the matter and will make any decisions that are considered necessary. The agency also said it plans to take a “narrow view” of the matter and will take additional steps to address potential problems.
The FDA issued a warning to consumers, and two physicians and one nurse wrote to the agency. On Friday, the FDA announced that it would seek to respond to a proposed by the agency in which the agency had not received a regulatory response letter from the manufacturer.
The company did not return a phone call or text messages asking for comment.
“This is an important step in the process of protecting consumers and their health,” the agency said.
According to the agency, “[t]he FDA’s regulatory actions are a direct response to a serious medical condition that is impacting the quality of life of the individual.”
“While we are committed to ensuring that pharmaceuticals are regulated appropriately, including for safety and efficacy, our regulatory authorities have not taken these actions in a timely manner.
A Chicago man who was taking Viagra to try to boost his libido has been cleared by his doctor of dangerous side effects.
Robert A. "Bob" Schachter, 55, was scheduled to be evaluated at Memorial Sloan-Ketter Hospital on Monday.
Schachter, who is also a medical director at the Memorial Sloan-Ketter Hospital, was scheduled to be examined Monday and said the condition had been "very well managed".
"He has been on Viagra for the last year or so, but nothing has really changed," he said.
He had been taking the drug for two years but said he had "very bad side effects" with his erections.
He has also been diagnosed with "severe low-grade inflammation", a condition where inflammation of the prostate gland is causing the prostate to shrink in a matter of minutes.
"He has been using it for a number of years and he still has a hard time with it," said Schachter, whose husband is also a physician.
He had a "severe pelvic inflammatory disease" and was put on an "anti-inflammatory treatment" with a "sustained release of nitric oxide" in the penile area.
He also was prescribed a "stronger" antibiotic, which he said he had not had in his treatment period.
While the condition was not listed in his medical history, Schachter said it has been known to cause erections and ejaculation.
A "surgical erection is a very sensitive process that is very complex and very difficult to deal with," he said. "In some cases there may be a serious and sometimes permanent problem with a penis."
His doctors said he was currently taking Viagra and was having sex on Tuesday.
"I don't know what the problem is, but I have a lot of questions about that," said Schachter, who is not at this stage.
Doctors found it was not causing erections but it also caused "severe" stomach problems.
The doctor said the condition was caused by something else: "Sildenafil is an inhibitor of the enzyme PDE-5 (phosphodiesterase-5), which is responsible for breaking down the drug, in the body. This can lead to an increased level of sildenafil in the blood."
The man's condition was also causing an erection that took the man for several hours.
Schachter said the condition has been reported to the Food and Drug Administration and to doctors in Chicago.
The man's condition has been listed as "severe" by the FDA but has not been confirmed.
The man's wife, Julie, said she has noticed a "huge difference" in her sex life. "I'm so relieved it's been cleared away."
She added: "I'm so grateful for what happened to me and I want to do all I can to help."
